why so graphically designed?

The title treatment for JOKER was pretty cool, despite my lack of interest in the movie itself, so this look at how it was designed is a good reminder of the role typefaces and lettering play in all forms of marketing.

more than just a newspaper

This is just one example of how media companies are expanding beyond their initial medium to increase brand exposure and attract more attention/investment.

suncoast was the best coast

I never bought many actual movies at Suncoast, but did buy plenty of movie-related merchandise. In particular I remember finding reproductions of the scripts for all three (at the time) Star Wars films that quickly became part of my collection.

leave the cash on the dresser

I love when marketers and analysts talk about how brands and social media influencers should be focused on “real relationships” when it’s just about the money.

cuts cuts cuts cuts

It’s shocking to me that these kinds of mergers aren’t being rejected *just* based on the number of jobs that are going to be cut as a result of the “efficiencies” identified.

vulnerable and not saving

A growing number of Americans are “financially vulnerable,” and even those who are more stable aren’t putting away the level of savings than before.

gig and switch

The biggest advantage “gig” companies have is that they’re the only companies around who can arbitrarily decrease payment rates 1) without telling workers they’re doing so and 2) with relative impunity because where else are people going to go?

updated shield

I like it. More than anything it makes me wonder why more corporate logos aren’t being redesigned to incorporate the flat look of mobile icons on a phone screen, which would seem to be good for brand recognition.

when you intentionally limit your audience

I get that “available resources” is given as the rationale here, but it would seem that every news organization should be working to expand its audience, not cut out entire demographics.

shortsighted racism

It’s cool how the party of free and open markets is commited to policies that aren’t only racist but which will negatively impact the economy.
