It makes sense for Spotify to purchase The Ringer given the shared emphasis on podcasts, but 1) what happens when the market turns and those shows aren’t as popular as they are now, and 2) we all remember that it’s bad when a market is dominated by a handful of companies who want all the content exclusive to themselves, right?
There are only so many hours everyone has in the day, and the buzz right now is with podcasts, not so much music.
I guess we’ll soon see if the National Lampoon brand still has some life left in it.
Some of the executions seem interesting enough, but any company trying to control the podcast format is bad for the internet, so I kind of hope this and other efforts like it fail spectacularly.
I’m confused, isn’t this what it’s been doing all along?
